Sweater Weather is Here - Inspirations to Knit or Crochet a Sweater

Fall is a great time to knit or crochet a sweater. We are geared up for Sweater Weather here at The Nook!!  In less than three weeks, we have the Fall Equinox and the season will change to my favorite time of the year.  The shorter days will bring that nip in the air and I already have sweater dreams dancing in my head!

I have a couple of recommendations if you guys get the itch to knit your own cozy sweater.  Whether you make a cardigan or a pull over, make a knit or crochet sweater, we have ideas here for you.

Knit Cardigans

                                                   Ramona Cardigan by Elizabeth Smith

The Ramona by Elizabeth Smith, is a nice classic Cardigan that you can make really fast, as you use chunky yarn.  Of course, it is very fun to knit!  I knit mine with Malabrigo Chunky in the Teal Feather colorway. It was such a comfort to curl up on the couch in my snuggly Ramona and knit the cold night away!  It also makes up beautifully in Cascade Chunky.  We used that yarn and the pattern for The Ramona for our beginning sweater class last year.

Winter Weeds Cardigan by Katya Gorbacheva

Next, take a look at the Winter Weeds Cardigan by Katya Gorbacheva. It is uses aran yarn. I have my eye on some beautiful Cestari Aran Merino Wool would be a great choice as well. It is a Merino/Alpaca blend that will be warm and comfortable. Similarly, Arco Iris would be perfect as a variegated option. Honestly, there are so many beautiful colors to choose from I can't make a firm recommendation.

                                                       Holy Comfort by Hinterm Stein

I also want to knit Holy Comfort by Hinterm Stein. It is simple, elegant, and a comfy loose cardigan.  It will make into a classic that will be in style for years.  The pattern calls for sock yarn.  I think I am going to choose a Merino/Cashmere/Nylon blend we have from Yarn Fairy and The Pixies.  It just feels so good!

Crochet Cardigans

First, check out the Verano Longline Cardigan by Jessica Reeves Potasz. It is a lengthy, versatile, light cardigan. It can be worn on cool summer nights, as well as crisp fall days. The sizing is great, as it goes from XS to XXL. Besides that, it is free! If you wanted to dress it up and give it more drape The Diana Collection Silk and Merino has close to 19 colorways for you to chose from. Yarn Fairy and Pixies has a great option with their pixie merino. This is a simple pattern with techniques beginning crocheters can handle with ease.

                                     Copenhagen Cardigan by Tatsiana Kupryianchyk

Next, we move to something a little bit more lacy, form fitting, and with more shaping. The Copenhagen Cardigan by Tatsiana Kupryianchyk is an amazing and ornate cardigan that is sure to be a closet staple! It uses an E hook and fingering weight yarn. It would look stunning in tonal and semi-solid yarn.

Knit Pullover

Want something a little lighter and with a touch of lace?  I can strongly recommend “Good To The Last Frost” pullover designed by Kayla D. Brant Designs. Her sweater is in the picture above on Kayla Brant, the artist! This stunning sweater is knit in the round. The simple lace accent at the bottom and down the sleeves highlights its classy line. I did mine in Imp DK (non-superwash Merino) from Yarn Fairy and The Pixies.  The color I used is London Calling and I have mine on display at The Nook.  The yarn is wonderful to work up and the end product is sure to make any knitter proud!

                                                        Celosias by Jennifer Steingass

For a knit pullover that employs the magic of colorwork, try Celosias by Jennifer Steingass. Knit pullovers are absolutely perfect for colorwork, as you are working in the round. Celosias is also knit in a DK weight yarn. This is another project that would be stunning in Lynn's Fine Yarn Silky DK. The pattern sizing is very inclusive and the finished sweater looks great on every body type!

Crochet Pullover

The Perfect Layering Sweater by Amanda Saladin

The Perfect Layering Sweater by Amanda Saladin is a great choice for variegated yarn. With solid and lacy areas, that special multi-colored yarn has the chance to absolutely shine! It uses DK weight yarn, so it works up quickly. You can use it in both warm and cool weather. That is always a huge plus!

                                                        Hail Storm by Stephanie Erin

If you would like to try your hand at sweater making with a fingering/sock weight yarn you can't go wrong with Hail Storm by Stephanie Erin. As a bonus, it is a beaded top! It comes in a wide range of sizes and is flattering! This one is sure to be fun to make and comfortable to wear. Malabrigo Sock Yarn has several solid and semi-solid colorways that would work very well in this sweater.

Ending Thoughts

By now, you should have figured out that I am a sucker for soft cushy yarns and that I love being nice and warm in winter.  I hope my ideas help you pick out your next project. A new cardi or pullover should get us through the winter and guarantees some fun crafting for the Fall.  I hope this inspires you to try a knit or crochet sweater this year!
